After last week's unsatisfactory and clattery affair, this week's was a much better game. Yes, we lost 0-3, but the score in no way reflected the balance of play. We were fairly evenly matched and probably had the edge in the first half.
The quality of play was so much better on both sides. Our passing and team play was great, as was our strength on the ball and determination. Basildon do have some hard hitters and perhaps we were a little wary about going too close to these players at free hits, but on the other hand, we did do a good job of blocking many of their smashed hits. This week we just couldn't get enough convincing attempts on goal though.
Their first goal was a little unfortunate for us in defence. Afraid I couldn't quite see from the side-line what went on with the second one, but their third one, the only goal in the second half, was definitely the result of an unintended deflection from one of their players, straight into the path of another attacker, who went on to score. Unlucky for us. There were some good saves from both goalies but actually the majority of the play was in the middle two thirds of the pitch.
Ella came a close runner up for MoM with her hard work and intelligent passing but this week the honour was shared between myself and Nicky, in defence, for our determined efforts.
Despite the loss I was really heartened by our level of play. Well done everyone!
